On Sunday, March 17, 2024, Jason Conway ran the 52nd annual Yuengling Shamrock Marathon to honor Ruby Stancill of Virginia Beach.

Ruby was born on August 8, 2020, nearly 15 weeks before her due date. Weighing just 1 pound, 6 ounces, she let out a cry that gave her parents hope her lungs would one day be strong enough to sustain her.

Ruby was immediately transferred to Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters’ neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where every year, more than 500 premature and critically ill newborns receive specialized treatment and get the best possible start to life.

“When I went to see Ruby in the NICU for the first time after she was born, I felt at ease as soon as I met her nurse,” says Ruby’s mom, Heather. “I had peace of mind that my baby was in the best hands possible, and I knew she was safe.”

Under the expert care of doctors, nurses, and staff in CHKD’s NICU, Ruby recovered from a dangerous intestinal condition and grew stronger every day.

“The NICU became like a second home and all of the staff felt like a second family,” says Heather. “The patience, care, and love they show all babies is unmatched.”

After 103 days, Ruby was able to go home to her mom, dad Daman, and big brother Henry. Today, Ruby is a bubbly 3-year-old who likes the color red, marshmallows and chocolate, and playing doctor.

“CHKD saved our sweet girl’s life,” says Heather. “It will forever hold a special place in our hearts.”

CHKD continues to be a place families know they can count on to care for their children. Donations made to support Jason’s campaign help CHKD bring the healing hands, advanced technology, and emotional support local children and families rely on.
