Visit your local Wawa and help children treated at CHKD

In honor of pediatric patients here in Hampton Roads, Virginia, Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) is thrilled and thankful to partner with The Wawa Foundation for the annual CMN Hospitals fundraising campaign during this difficult time. When we fund children’s hospitals, we transform how we meet the most urgent needs, saving more lives and protecting our collective future.

Wawa and The Wawa Foundation recognize children’s hospitals to be on the front lines of this pandemic, caring for our youngest and a most vulnerable population. In Wawa’s continued commitment to support those who support local communities affected by COVID-19, Wawa and The Wawa Foundation’s annual campaign will take place throughout the month of May. Through May 31st, Wawa customers can donate $1, $3 or $5 dollars to help kids like Julian. Customers are also welcomed to continue donating through The Wawa Foundation coin collection program.

Julian, 9, was a toddler when doctors at CHKD diagnosed him with glycogen storage disease – a rare genetic disorder that impairs the function of the liver and muscles. As a result, Julian endures constant muscle pain and fatigue. When he gets tired, he uses a wheelchair.

Every day, it’s a race against the clock to keep his blood sugar within a safe range. At age 6, he needed a gastrostomy tube to help with his constant feedings. Despite the pain and challenge of living with glycogen storage disease, Julian always finds the strength to keep fighting.

Wawa has been a proud partner of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals for 16 years and has raised more than $250,000 to help our hospital. There is no doubt, COVID-19 has changed nearly everything in our lives. But one thing hasn’t changed: Children still need CHKD for sudden illnesses and injuries, management of chronic health conditions, surgery, preventive care, vaccinations, and mental health struggles. Funds raised ensure children can continue to receive the care they need, regardless of their families’ ability to pay.

On behalf of Julian and all the kids treated at CHKD, thanks in advance for your support of sick and injured children in our area.

When we change kids’ health, we change the future – for all of us.
