Extra Lifer’s Rally to Bring Gaming Systems to CHKD’s Children’s Pavilion
Every year, gamers across Hampton Roads, the eastern shore of Virginia, and northeastern North Carolina unite to play games and support children’s well-being. They mobilize their network of friends, family, and colleagues to donate in support of Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) in Norfolk, Virginia.
CHKD, the local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, is dedicated to providing Health, Healing and Hope for All Children. In addition to ensuring we can provide the best care for every child, philanthropy helps us to provide services that aren’t reimbursable by insurance, like Child Life, Buddy Brigade Pet Therapy, music and art therapy, chaplaincy, as well as toys, games and crafts.
This year, Extra Lifers are raising funds to help our mental health program purchase six fully loaded game systems for the inpatient units at Children’s Pavilion, CHKD’s pediatric mental health hospital. These units are specially designed for hospital use, incorporating additional safety features for inpatient mental health settings.
We have challenged our Extra Life community to raise $30,000, which would allow us to purchase (2) Xbox consoles, (2) Nintendo Switches, and (2) PlayStations.
The support of Extra Life plays a crucial role in enhancing the wellbeing and happiness of children we serve. Gaming serves as a vital source of entertainment and diversion from medical procedures and the hospital atmosphere.
Patients can play with visiting family members to help create a sense of normalcy during their stay. It can help reduce isolation and improve morale – all of which can contribute to hope and healing.
Gaming can be a wonderful way to relax and unwind, and we look forward to bringing these game systems to Children’s Pavilion so that our patients can relax, unwind and heal through gaming.
We extend heartfelt gratitude to our Extra Life community for embracing this mission! Your compassion and generosity will bring countless smiles to the faces of children in need.
